Hoosier Horsepower Lesson Plans Touted to Indiana Science Teachers PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 February 2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 2, 2010) — As Indianapolis Colts Tight End Dallas Clark and his teammates prepare for Super Bowl XLIV, Hoosier corn and soybean farmers congratulate Clark on a successful year which so far has resulted in raising more than $11,100 for a scholarship fund benefiting Indiana high school students.

For each catch Clark makes this season and in the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Colts are donating $100 to the “Fueling Our Future Scholarship Fund” on behalf of Indiana’s corn and soybean farmers. The fund awards scholarships to high school students who create videos through the Hoosier Horsepower program. With only the Super Bowl remaining, Clark had 100 receptions during the regular season and 11 receptions in the two playoff games.

In addition to the scholarships, the Indianapolis Colts, in conjunction with the Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC) and the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA), are offering Hoosier Horsepower Lesson Plans to Indiana teachers. The lesson plans, which help students explore the benefits biofuels provide our state, feature Clark as the program’s spokesperson. Teachers can access the lesson plans and become eligible to win Colts prizes by registering at www.colts.com/hoosierhorsepower.

While the high school and middle school lesson plans are currently available, the Hoosier Horsepower program will also offer grade-level lessons for elementary school students in the spring.

Students and classrooms completing the Hoosier Horsepower lesson plans can win autographed footballs, appearances by the Colts Mascot “Blue,” pizza parties, as well as tours of Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center. The program will also recognize teachers for their outstanding work in the classroom by granting Hoosier Horsepower Teacher Awards.

More than 1,600 Indiana science teachers and administrators will have the opportunity to learn more about the Hoosier Horsepower Lesson Plans during the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. (HASTI) Conference in Indianapolis February 3-5. ISA and ICMC are hosting an exhibit at the HASTI Conference where teachers can get more information and sign up for some great prizes.

All of these efforts are designed to help share with Indiana consumers the benefits of biofuels and the pride of Hoosier farmers in helping to fuel Indiana’s economy. In total, Indiana’s ethanol and biodiesel plants have invested more than $2.3 billion in capital expenses, added millions of dollars in new farm income - and they have the potential to use 423 million bushels of corn and 70 million bushels of soybeans annually.

Visit www.colts.com/HoosierHorsepower or call the ISA/ICMC office at 317-347-3620 to learn more about the Hoosier Horsepower program. Visit www.indianabiofuels.com to learn more about ethanol and biodiesel.

The Indiana Soybean Alliance works to enhance the viability of Indiana soybean farmers through the effective and efficient investment of soybean checkoff funds and the development of sound policies that protect and promote the interest of Indiana soybean farmers. The ISA is working to build new markets for soybeans through the promotion of biodiesel, livestock, international marketing, new soybean uses, aquaculture, and research. ISA is led by an elected farmer board that directs investments of the soybean checkoff funds on behalf of more than 28,000 Indiana soybean farmers and promotes policies on behalf of the ISA’s 950 dues-paying members.

The Indiana Corn Marketing Council was established by the Indiana General Assembly to promote the interest of corn growers in the state and manage corn checkoff funds. The Council is composed of 17 voting producer directors and 10 appointed farmer, industry, and government representatives.
