INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 5, 2010) — Indiana grain farmers can gain insight on commodity markets from a leading agricultural marketing advisor and learn more about how to stay in compliance with the state’s transportation regulations from a Purdue extension specialist during the Soybean/Corn breakout sessions at the Indiana Livestock, Forage and Grain Forum at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis on Friday, January 15.
Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) is sponsoring the forum in conjunction with the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, Indiana Corn Marketing Council, Indiana Farm Bureau, Indiana Forage Council, Indiana Goat Producers Association, Indiana Horse Council, Indiana Pork, Indiana Professional Dairy Producers, Indiana Sheep Association, and Milk Promotion Services of Indiana. Registration information can be found at www.indianasoybean.com/forum, along with a complete agenda for the one-day event.
The day starts at 9 a.m. with a general session for all participants. The keynote speaker is Dr. Lowell Catlett, an agricultural economist from New Mexico State University. Following lunch, each commodity group will offer breakout sessions where participants can mix and match sessions from any of the commodity topics that interest them.
The Soybean/Corn breakout sessions are being sponsored by Beck’s Hybrids and Monsanto. The first session, beginning at 2 p.m., includes a brief combined meeting of both the ISA and Indiana Corn Growers Association (ICGA) where an update on key state and national policy issues will be given.
Beginning at 2:30 p.m., Richard Brock, owner and president of Brock Associates, an agricultural marketing advisory service and publisher of The Brock Report, presents a program titled “The Changing World and Its Impact on Grain Prices.” In common sense terms, Brock brings the chaotic world into relevance for soybean and corn prices. He provides his perspective on inflation and deflation and explains what farmers should be doing strategically to capture commodity moves in the months ahead.
Fred Whitford, coordinator of Purdue Pesticide Programs of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, is the featured speaker at the Soybean/Corn breakout session starting at 4 p.m. His presentation – “Trucks, Tractors, Trailers and Implements of Ag” – focuses on making Department of Transportation (DOT) and other state transportation regulations easier for farmers to understand. In a step-by-step manner, DOT numbers, medical cards, driver’s licenses, annual inspections, safety equipment, plating vehicles and trailers, log books, seatbelts, size and load limitations and more will be covered in this session. PARP credits are available for an additional cost with this session.
Attendees can also visit a trade show throughout the day, featuring a variety of companies and organizations that farmers do business with on a daily basis. The day concludes with a reception sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Registration is $25 per person; pre-registration is required and no on-site registrations will be accepted. A complete agenda and additional registration information can be found at www.indianasoybean.com/forum.
