With increased corn-based ethanol production in Indiana, the use of ethanol co-products to feed livestock has become of interest to Hoosier livestock producers. Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC) supported a market analysis of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) for both the U.S. and Indiana by Dr. Frank Dooley, Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue University.
U.S. DDGS Market Analysis
Prior research presumes that the U.S. livestock feed demand for dried
distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can accommodate the rapid growth
in DDGS production. The objective of this work is to reexamine the
market potential for DDGS by considering factors that limit the adoption rate of DDGS. Click here to download a PDF of this document.
Indiana DDGS Market Analysis
The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry in Indiana has saturated
the local market for the principal co-product, distillers grains with
solubles (DDGS). In the near term, Indiana’s livestock industry can be
expected to consume up to 895,000 tons of DDGS per year. But given
production of 2.7 million tons, Indiana’s ethanol producers will rely
on railroads and barges to ship excess production to out-of-state
destinations. Livestock producers will have a ready access to DDGS
across the state. Click here to download a PDF of this document.
Distillers Grain Handbook: A Guide for Indiana Producers to Using DDGS for Animal Feed
Along with the rest of the country, livestock producers in Indiana are
investigating the use of ethanol co-products as substitutes for corn
and soybean meal. This handbook serves as a tool for Indiana producers
interested in the basics of feeding dry grind mill ethanol production
co-products. After briefly describing the two main types of distillers
grains and typical feeding recommendations, this handbook identifies
sources of distillers grains in Indiana and key web resources. Click here to download a PDF of this document, or view the online version. |
