Root Beer Wings Wins Colts Tailgate Contest

 

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 25, 2017) — Rico Mendez’s “Root Beer Chicken Wings” took home the title of “Colts Best Tailgate Recipe” and a $1000 cash prize, beating out Gene Cottinghams’s “Big Daddy’s Jambalaya.” 
 
The 2017 Colts Best Tailgate Recipe Contest sponsored by Indiana farmers through the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance was held in Touchdown Town before the Indianapolis Colts played the Jacksonville Jaguars.
 
Mendez and Cottingham were selected to participate in the contest after their recipes were chosen from dozens of submissions earlier in the season. Former Colts player Mike Prior led a panel, which judged the recipes based on presentation, food quality, taste, creativity and Colts enthusiasm. Use of Indiana products in the recipes was also strongly encouraged.
 
“Growing up in Indiana, I have family members that are farmers and I greatly appreciate all the local products that are made in Indiana, which is why I thought this contest was special,” said Mendez, who lives in Sheridan, Ind. “I used chicken from an Indiana farmer and root beer that is made right here in Indianapolis.”

Mendez’s and Cottingham’s recipes are featured in the Colts Tailgate Recipe Cookbooklet, which was distributed to 10,000 fans attending Sunday’s game. Kelly Whiteman-Snipes, ICMC Supply Committee Chair and farmer from Fulton Co., has a recipe for Scotcharoos featured in the book.

That’s why ICMC and ISA wanted to sponsor the 2017 Colts Best Tailgate Recipe Contest,” said Whiteman-Snipes. “Indiana corn and soybeans play a key role in ensuring that Hoosiers have high quality food, and we are excited to join with Colts fans across the state to highlight delicious, new tailgate recipes created by Hoosiers.”
