ICMC’s livestock initiative has sponsored several research studies that have helped Indiana livestock producers improve their operations.
DDGs research is a top priority for ICMC. Feeding distillers grain to livestock continues to be an important topic because of the widespread availability of distillers grain in Indiana and high cost of alternative feed grains. Currently, ICMC is working with other corn states to look at livestock diets with DDG incorporation.
Managing Swine Manure in Soybean and Corn Production Systems is a project is evaluating the ability of corn and soybeans to be a nutrient management option for swine manure applications. Objectives are to determine:
- The optimal swine manure application rates for N uptake, grain N removal, and grain yield for first-crop soybean;
- The differences in N uptake and grain N removal between soybean and corn; and,
- The optimal swine manure application rates for N uptake, grain N removal and grain yield for double-crop soybean.
(Began summer of 2012 and follow through crop season 2013.)
